Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
