Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
